  .::English Culture and Literature::.

     The Department of English  Language and Literature is one of the first departments established in 2007 in response to Turkey’s growing needs for those who know English not merely as a spoken language but also within the context of its literary riches.  The Department strives to enable the students to use their full intellectual potentials to understand the ideas, attitudes and  movements in the English Literature. It is likely that never has English been so important for us than now given the fact that we will become a partner of European Union. In keeping with this philosophy this Department offers a wide range of elective courses to meet expectations and to provide the students with comparative perspective on the world. To achieve this ideal, we offer to our students  an environment to foster skills in learning and collaboration, to write persuasively and to express themselves intelligently in English. We expect that our graduates will enjoy productive careers whether in public or private sectors, in our own country or abroad.

Department Head

The goal of the department

    This Department  places an emphasis on  literature and, by extention, culture from a broad perspective.While  literature remains at the center of the curriculum, our students have the opportunity  to study  western tradition in general.
Hence the primary objective of the department of English Language and Literature is not only to focus on language and literature but also to consider  various issues through different cultural perspectives.
The Department of English Language and Literature  offers 4-year BA program. The compulsory core courses in the Department which introduce the students to English literature are supported by a number of elective courses designed to offer them maximum opportunity to meet their needs and interests.     The students who are not exempted  by the proficiency examination of our department enroll in a two semester program of English Preparatory School. All the students take compulsory courses during their undergraduate education.
The curriculum  provides the students with the opportunity of a broad study of English Literature, developing their capacity to respond to texts  with thoughtful, analytical and independent critical approach as well as refining  their communication skills. Apart from linguistic courses teaching the history and development of English language along with various learning techniques, the literary courses cover the English literature from its origin in Anglo-Saxon England to the modern literature of the 20th and early 21st centuries.
The undergaraduate program in this department is designed to equip the students with a basic understanding of English literature and literary movements. Therefore the courses to improve the skill of textual analysis, understanding, evaluating and criticizing the  major works written in different periods of English Literature and in different literary genres, constitute the most important part of the curriculum. The department still attaches great importance to the ability to read literary texts closely and attentively.For this reason the main qualities we are looking for in our prospective students are criticizing energy, promise, and enthusiasm.

Course plan

Besides the core classes, students are offered elective courses covering linguistics and western culture. In the first two terms the students are introduced to the conceptual and technical tools used in the study of literature, and to a wide range of different critical assumptions and approaches through which they then acquire and develop their criticizing skills.
The courses are assessed by written examinations –midterm and final exams-; essays and presentations have varying weights on midterm exam.  The effect of mid-term exam is 40%, that of final exam is 60% on passing grade. The total credit hours for graduation is 170 hours.The students are required to attend 70% of the classes. Final grades consist of one mid-term and one final examinations.
We follow a problem-based learning or Active Learning method instead of a  teacher- centered one  in order to urge the students  to question and discuss the issues raised in reading texts. The medium of instruction is English. Graduate study  is also available in Master’s  level.
          The students have access to the main Library, and other faculty libraries. There are also quite extensive electronic resources  for English Studies. All colleges have computing facilities for undergraduates to use.

Work opportunities

       We are sure that the graduates of the Depatment of English Language and Literature will have an exceptionally good record in achieving employment in a wide range of areas such as in universities and schools as scholars and teachers, in international business and  relations. They are also entitled to move on to professions which are not directly related to the subject such as  journalism and mass media. Thanks to their independent critical thinking abilities and their sound knowledge of western culture , our graduates also have opportunities to find jobs in the fields of publishing, tourism and  government service.

Scholarship Opportunities

                10% of the students who have got 2 grade in the University Entrance Exam will study in our department with 50% scholarship within quota.
